ITS ALL ABOUT THE BIKE Non Motorhome trip

As I indicated in my last blog we tend to park up the motorhome this time of year, but that doesn't mean we don't get out and about, well when I say we I mean me.

Our interest in motorhomes was sparked many years ago when motor cycle road racing was my main interest and I purely needed a van to use as a base while we attended the events, to cut a long story short for various reasons (not only the numbers of fatalities) we fell out of love with the sport of road racing in-spite of giving many years to the sport it is highly unlikely I will ever attend one again.

But as they say as one door closes another one opens. As a young man I had spent a decent amount of time racing push bikes and so @the age of 45 a come back to cycle road racing was planned and 15 years later I can safely say I had a very successful return to cycling competing at a hi level until recently, even now I still ride out with the local fast men but its getting harder !

Over the last few years part of my training plan is to get away from the Irish weather for a week or so this time of year. This year my training partner and myself managed to get away to Grand Canaria . We were blessed with 10 days of bright sunshine @22c just about perfect conditions for cycling, I managed 25 hours in the saddle with approx 10k meters a climbing in the mountains around the Porto Rico it was also very nice to be able to swim in the sea in February.

The trip went without a hitch the flights were booked with Ryan-air well in advance they charge €60 each way for a bike box there are also many bike hire companies on the Island but we like to bring our own its always a relief when the bike appears on the oversize luggage belt. We got the bus from the airport, the 91 express goes to Porto Mogan with the first stop being Porto Rico @€6.50 it is very handy. We did miss the first bus as we had to wait until all the normal luggage was loaded on to the bus only then were we allowed to but the bikes on board, there was no room for the bikes so the bus left without us but we got the next bus only having a 30min wait ... we were in no hurry. One thing I did notice is the cost of accommodation has gone up (all them Baby Boomers again). Our home for the 10 days was Amadores just outside Porto Rico its a small put perfectly formed resort busy during the day but very quite at night prefect for us . We stayed at the Terraza Amadores again, they are self-catering apartments quite big but probably could do with an update but clean with Mr Bongs onsite bar providing cheap lunch and cold beer if that's your thing. This is the 3rd time I have stayed here and would have no problem going back. For our evening meals we would do the 10 minute stroll to the beach front restaurants with the Blue Beach being our favourite but they are all much the same there is a very nice walkway along the coast to Porto Rico it takes about 10 to 15 min, we went in one night Porto Rico has a nice buzz if you fancy a change .

Theres not much to report it was just 10 of days of eat sleep cycle repeat, There seems to be a busy motorhome hire scene with lots of vans about there was a big influx of vans to the seaside at the weekends most likely the locals coming down from the hills. The 10 days flashed by much to quickly another trip on the 91 bus got us back to the airport in good time and that was it .... I'm definitely going to spend more time in Spain next winter I may even join the snowbirds and take the van to the Costas or Portugal .

There are plans afoot for our motorhome adventures later this year with one ferry booked already and another earlier plan just waiting for Pollys approval we are looking forward to getting back on the road.

Until next time happy camping and don't forget to wave.
